Biography
Matthew Kersten is a Partner at Sutherland Law and an accomplished litigator with a broad Ontario practice focused on commercial litigation, estate disputes, bankruptcy and insolvency proceedings, construction and real estate litigation, employment matters, and appellate advocacy.
Prior to joining Sutherland Law, Matthew completed his articles at a large full-service firm before refining his advocacy skills at a respected downtown litigation boutique. He has represented individuals, businesses, trustees, creditors, and estates before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Commercial List, and the Court of Appeal for Ontario in a wide range of complex and high-stakes matters. His reported decisions reflect extensive experience handling shareholder and partnership disputes, fraud and injunction proceedings, insolvency and receivership matters, contested estates, contractual disputes, and strategically significant procedural motions.
With more than a decade of litigation experience, Matthew has successfully advocated for clients in summary judgment motions, appeals, commercial enforcement proceedings, and other complex disputes where business, financial, and reputational interests are at stake. He is known for providing practical, strategic, and results-oriented counsel tailored to each client's objectives.
Matthew earned his law degree from Queen's University Faculty of Law, where he served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Queen's Law Journal and played a leading role in the development of the Canadian Guide to Legal Citation, a widely used resource among Canadian legal academics, practitioners, and students.
Outside the practice of law, Matthew enjoys playing guitar, travelling, golfing, and spending time with his family.
