Gawtam Tharmakumaran

Gawtam Tharmakumaran is an Associate at Sutherland Law with a developing practice in civil and commercial litigation. He advises clients across a broad spectrum of disputes, including real estate litigation, shareholder conflicts, mortgage enforcement, Tarion warranty claims, and regulatory compliance and defence matters. Gawtam is known for his practical, solutions-oriented approach and his ability to advance files efficiently, even in complex or high-pressure situations.

Prior to joining Sutherland Law, Gawtam practiced at a boutique litigation firm in Toronto, where he was entrusted with carriage of his own files early in his career. He has appeared before all levels of court in Ontario, including the Small Claims Court, the Ontario Court of Justice, the Superior Court of Justice, as well as administrative tribunals such as the Licence Appeal Tribunal.

Gawtam holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto and earned his law degree from City St. George’s, University in London, England. During law school, he distinguished himself by winning first place in the City Law School Case Competition, which led to a competitive placement at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner (BCLP). There, he gained exposure to commercial disputes and sports and entertainment matters. He also completed a summer program at the University of Oxford, earning achievements in advocacy and commercial law.

Following his return to Canada, Gawtam obtained his Certificate of Qualification from the National Committee on Accreditation and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2025.

Gawtam is fluent in English and Tamil, allowing him to effectively serve a diverse client base. He is recognized for his attention to detail, strong work ethic, and commitment to delivering strategic, client-focused results.

Outside of his practice, Gawtam enjoys spending time with his wife and his new puppy. He is also an avid sports enthusiast and regularly plays basketball, soccer, football, and baseball.
